Ofcom’s strategic approach to AI

Ofcom has detailed its strategy for supporting safe AI innovation across telecoms, broadcast, online platforms, and postal sector, highlighting AI’s role in enhancing opportunities across their regulated areas. Additionally, they also set out their internal approach to using AI, focused on improving efficiencies.

In terms of telecoms, Ofcom identifies that AI could be used in cases such as detecting anomalies and preventing congestion, or identifying and mitigating threats – all of which could create better outcomes for consumers by improving service delivery and reliability.

They are also working with a wide range of stakeholders – from the NCSC and government, to academics and standards bodies – to develop and improve upon its knowledge and expertise. Over the next year, they plan to accelerate the use of AI across their policy areas as appropriate, adopting a “safety-first” approach; trialing AI tools and only rolling them out once they are safe and secure.
