Following the Cabinet reshuffle in early September 2025, Liz Kendall has been confirmed as Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, replacing Peter Kyle. Shabana Mahmood has become Home Secretary, replacing Yvette Cooper.
Ian Murray has replaced Sir Chris Bryant as Minister of State in the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology, and has also taken on the role of Minister of State for Creative Industries, Arts and Tourism. It is currently unclear whether the Data Protection and Telecoms will be Murray’s remit, or whether this will be given to a different minister. Sir Chris Bryant has moved to the Department for Business and Trade as a Minister of State.
Murray is a senior Labour figure who ran for the party’s deputy leadership in 2020. Murray, who previously served as Secretary of State for Scotland, has previously crossed paths with the telecoms industry when he co-founded an internet television station early in his career. Upon being elected in 2015, he also served as Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on ITV. He also previously had a stint on the Business, Innovation and Skills Committee, which concluded in a report that Scottish independence would have a negative impact on the telecoms industry.
Fraud Minister Lord Hanson remains in post at the Home Office with oversight of the forthcoming Fraud Strategy and the voluntary fraud charter that CCUK is supporting.
CCUK will engage with DSIT on sector priorities, and will update members on any further relevant appointments and remit changes.
