Minister of State for Security Dan Jarvis used his address at the International Security Expo on 30th September to set out the government's progress across the security landscape, with several announcements of relevance to the telecoms and cyber sectors.
Jarvis confirmed that the National Cyber Action Plan, which will bring industry and the private sector within scope of the government's cyber resilience agenda, is imminent, following the Cyber Action Plan published earlier this year and backed by over £210 million in investment. He also reaffirmed the government's commitment to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, describing it as the most significant update to the UK's cyber regulatory framework in years.
On fraud, Jarvis pointed to a new Online Crime Centre bringing together law enforcement, intelligence agencies, banks, communications providers and technology companies to dismantle fraud networks at scale, a body of direct relevance to the telecoms sector given the industry's role in tackling number spoofing and call routing abuse. Secure communications were also listed explicitly among the UK's strategic sovereign capabilities, alongside AI, cyber security and counter-drone technology.
