CCUK webinar: options for industry collaboration against fraud

Fraud is a rising threat to all UK businesses. The scale and severity of attacks on businesses and consumers is growing year on year – with the latest UK Finance report estimating losses to the UK economy of £1.1 billion in 2024. At the same time, businesses are finding it difficult to engage with customers as legitimate emails and phone calls are ignored amidst rising fears of scams.

In recognising the seriousness of the threat, prevention has become a major focus for both the UK government and telecoms industry. As such, CCUK has arranged a webinar for our members, bringing together experts from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and the Cyber Defence Alliance (CDA), to discuss their work in monitoring and combatting this issue.

Part 1 | CDA: An Insight into the work of the CDA, their use of killchains, and telco collaboration

The Cyber Defence Alliance (CDA) is a non-profit organisation which operates the financial sector, yet holds strong links to telecommunications and other sectors. From this balance, they have developed a range of services to identify and mitigate against fraud and cyber-attacks. Additionally, the CDA will pursue those responsible, working with law enforcement, seeking to disrupt the criminals who provide enabling fraud and cyber services.

This presentation will demonstrate how using a fraud killchain to steer these efforts has led to building significant tooling, mitigations and will delve into those relationships and working practices with the telecoms community; law enforcement; tech and Government, including the NCSC.

The CDA will also discuss how those telecom organisations, who may not have a direct relationship with the CDA, can become more involved in these cross-sector initiatives.

Part 2 | NCSC: Share and Defend

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has developed a range of tools and services aimed at identifying and disrupting malicious websites and infrastructure online. Their latest capability, Share and Defend, focuses on improving protection by working with threat intelligence providers and security vendors to gather and distribute data on malicious indicators, such as harmful domains.

This data is shared with industry partners, including Internet Service Providers, who use it to filter threats through their DNS platforms. As a result, access to certain malicious content is blocked for users across the UK, helping to reduce exposure to online threats.

This session will provide an overview of these services and how they contribute to a broader effort to make the internet safer. Although currently focused on online threats, the NCSC is also considering future initiatives to involve the wider telecoms sector; we encourage members to join to gain insight into the direction of travel for government and security thinking.
